The European Day for Sustainable Communities is a celebration of local communities taking action for a better, more sustainable world. It gives local communities an opportunity to join with others to showcase their work and inspire the wider public. There are many thousands of community initiatives across Europe from renewable energy cooperatives to community farms and gardens, ecological housing projects to waste reduction initiatives and much more. #EDaySC2018 aims to give these initiatives the profile they deserve. The main organiser of the day is ECOLISE, the European Network for Community-led Initiatives on Climate Change and Sustainability.
The European Day of Sustainable Communities was first held in 2017. That year communities and organisations from 15 countries across Europe joined in the celebrations. The day was also marked by a conference on sustainable communities in Brussels in partnership with the European Economic and Social Committee. This year, the conference will take place on 20 September 2018, on the theme of municipalities and community-led initiatives. It will be a blended meeting so participants can join online.
Local communities who are working to create a sustainable, resilient and inclusive Europe are also invited to organise an event to mark the day. It can be as simple or as ambitious as you like. For more information please see sustainable-communities.net
